PART 2: The House They Tried to Take Was Never Theirs: A Pregnant Woman’s Hidden Truth

“My friends are going to be jealous,” she had said while standing beside the resort’s infinity pool. “They’ll finally understand that Julian made the right choice.”

Julian had smiled at the time.

He had believed everything was under control.

His wife, Claire, was still at home. The baby was due soon. The house was still there. His routines were still there.

At least, that was what he told himself.

He ignored the strange feeling that followed him throughout the flight home.

A small voice in his mind kept asking the same question.

Why hadn’t Claire called?

At first, he convinced himself it was because she was angry.

That was easier to believe.

Claire had always been independent. Too independent, according to Beatrice.

“She thinks because her father left her that house, she’s above everyone,” Beatrice often said.

Julian never corrected her.

The truth was, he admired that confidence in Claire when they first met.

She had been different from everyone else he knew.

She didn’t chase attention. She didn’t need approval. She had grown up surrounded by people who taught her that security came from preparation, not appearances.

Her father, Thomas, had been the person who shaped that mindset.

Thomas had built his company from nothing. He had taught Claire how to read contracts, understand investments, and protect herself.

“Love people,” he once told her, “but never surrender your ability to stand on your own.”

Julian used to respect that.

Until he realized Claire’s independence meant she could leave.

That was when respect slowly turned into resentment.

By the time their marriage reached its fifth year, Julian had started feeling like he was standing beside a person whose life was already complete without him.

Instead of becoming a partner, he had started trying to become the person who controlled the direction.

And Beatrice had encouraged every step.

“She needs someone to guide her,” his mother always said.

Julian never asked why guidance always seemed to mean taking something away from Claire.

The taxi stopped outside the house.

Julian stepped out with his sunglasses still on.

Beatrice followed behind him carrying shopping bags.

“This trip was exactly what we needed,” she said. “A fresh start.”

Julian smiled faintly.

Then he looked toward the house.
