A 16-Year-Old Boy Spent Every Weekend at His Best Friend’s House—Until His Friend’s Mom Called and Asked, “When Is My Son Coming Home? He’s Been Staying at Your House for Weeks!”

“Oh, Nathan. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Grandpa’s selling the house. Cole and I have been helping him save Dad’s things.”

“What things?”

“There’s something Dad started making before I was born. I wanted to finish it.”

Nathan explained that he and Cole had spent their weekends working in Frank’s workshop. Frank knew the boys were lying to their mothers.

“I begged him not to tell you,” Nathan admitted.

“He’s the adult. He should’ve known better.”

“Why didn’t you ask me?” I asked.

“Because you’d have said no.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Mom, you won’t even drive down Grandpa’s street.”

I started to respond, but he continued.

“Last month, I asked what Dad was like when he was my age. You told me to take out the trash.”
