Under it our children placed a small plate.
It said:
“From now on, we will not miss a single holiday that we could spend together.”
That evening, for the first time in years, we were all sitting at the same dinner table.
The grandchildren laughed.
Our children told stories.
Robert sat next to me and held my hand under the table.
No one checked the flight schedule.
No one was worried about a long way home.
No one counted how many months it would take until the next meeting.
We were just together.
Later that evening, when everyone dispersed to their homes, Robert and I stood on the veranda and looked at the quiet street.
Are you still angry with me? he asked.
- A little.
He smiled.
How long will it last?
