After Our Dad Died, My Older Brother with Down Syndrome Offered to Walk Me Down the Aisle – Only My MIL Objected
Mom?
She’d cry before we reached the first pew.
Walking alone?
Possible.
But every version ended with me noticing who wasn’t there.
Then Nathan asked.
I covered my mouth with my hand.
He waited.
“Sarah?”
I nodded because speaking wasn’t happening yet.
“Yes.”
His whole face changed.
“Yes?” he repeated.
“Yes, Nathan.”
He stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.
Then he hugged me hard enough to hurt.
“I won’t go too fast.”
I laughed into his shoulder.
“Good.”
“I practiced with Dad before.”
I pulled back.
“What?”
“For your wedding.”
“You practiced with Dad?”
Nathan shrugged like this was obvious.
“A long time ago.”
Dad had apparently joked with him years earlier that when I finally got married, Nathan would have to make sure he didn’t trip over his own feet walking behind us.
