I married a stranger from a hospital waiting room so he wouldn’t d!e alone — after our one-week marriage, his lawyer handed me his backpack, saying, “He wanted you to know the truth.”

Caleb stared fixedly at the certified paperwork in Arthur’s hand. His corporate composure finally shattered, flushing his face a deep, furious red.

“This is far from over,” Caleb spat, glaring back at me. “You think you can hold onto that building? You know nothing about real estate, business, or power. You’re merely a lonely girl clinging to a dead child’s rags.”

He spun on his heel and stormed out of the room, his associate scrambling hurriedly behind him as the door slammed shut.

I sank back into the chair, clutching the red dress tightly as my chest heaved.

Arthur looked down at me with genuine sympathy. “He won’t back down easily, Nora. He commands millions.”

I glanced down at the soda can pull tab still resting on my finger, then over to the bright red silk of Lily’s dress.
