Kayla’s knees nearly gave out.

“I begged Dad not to tell you,” she whispered. “I didn’t want prom ruined. I didn’t want everyone knowing.”

David looked devastated.

But before anyone could respond, Reese lifted the recorder again.

She turned the cassette over.

On the label, in her messy handwriting, were two words:

AFTERPARTY PLAN.

Steven stopped smiling.

Reese pressed play.

Another girl’s voice came through.

She sounded terrified.

“Kayla… I’m sorry. I should have told you sooner.”

Kayla stared at the recorder.

“Who is that?”

“Emily,” Reese said.

Steven’s expression changed instantly.

Emily continued.

She said Steven had threatened her.

Told her nobody would believe her.

Told her that if she spoke up, he would spread private information about her through the school.
