“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I told Nolan that Briggs saw me,” Jesse said. “And Nolan knew Briggs. Not well, but well enough to know he was dirty.”
Nolan took Jesse inside the garage, locked the doors, and called a man he trusted, an old friend who worked with federal investigators in another state.
At first, nothing about it was official.
There was no clean paperwork.
No formal rescue.
No calm explanation.
There was only a frightened boy, a dead informant, a corrupt detective, and a local police department where no one knew who could be trusted.
Within hours, Jesse was moved from the garage to a motel, then from the motel to a safe house across the state line.
He gave a statement to federal investigators under an emergency protective order. His name was sealed because the case involved a compromised detective, missing evidence, and people inside local law enforcement who might have leaked his location.
