My Daughter Loaded Two Carts With Luxury Groceries and Told Me, “You Live Under My Roof, So Pay”—She Had No Idea What I Would Cancel Before Midnight

I almost smiled from disbelief.

“I’m aware of that.”

“No. I mean… not most of it.”

My pulse began pounding in my neck.

“How much did the renovation cost?”

Silence.

“Melissa.”

“Thirty-eight thousand.”

I stared at her.

I had given them more than a quarter of a million dollars.

Thirty-eight thousand had been used for the space I was promised.

The space I never received.

“Where is the rest?”

Grant immediately stepped forward.

“It was not wasted.”

I turned to him.

“Then tell me where it is.”

“We improved the property.”

“With two hundred thirty thousand dollars?”

“There were debts. Investments. Career expenses. Necessary purchases.”

Ruth muttered, “Necessary to whom?”

Grant glared at her.

“This does not involve you.”

“You drove onto my street screaming. Congratulations, it involves me now.”
