My Husband Always Said, “You Just Carry Plates While I Do Real Work.” Then One Night, His Boss Walked In, Saw Me in My Waitress Uniform, and Suddenly Stood Up

I started there when our daughter was still a baby.

At first, it was supposed to be temporary.

Robert had an office job, and he always reminded me that his salary was the one keeping our family going.

“You’re lucky,” he would say.

“Your job is basically talking to people and bringing them food.”

He never saw me standing for hours without sitting down.

He never saw customers snapping their fingers at me.

He never saw me cleaning tables after closing time or hiding in the staff room for a few minutes after someone treated me badly.

And he never really asked.

Over the years, Robert moved higher in his company. With every promotion, the jokes about my job seemed to get worse.

One Christmas, his brother asked me how work was going. Before I could answer, Robert laughed.
