My Husband Always Said, “You Just Carry Plates While I Do Real Work.” Then One Night, His Boss Walked In, Saw Me in My Waitress Uniform, and Suddenly Stood Up

“And for eighteen years, I’ve wondered who she was.”

The next evening, Robert came home earlier than usual.

He didn’t mention the promotion.

He walked into the kitchen and stood there while I prepared dinner.

Finally he said:

“Mr. Harrison told me about last night.”

I kept cutting vegetables.

Robert was silent for a long time.

Then he pulled out a chair.

“He said something else.”

I looked at him.

Robert’s eyes were red.

“He asked me how I could work beside him for fifteen years and never once tell him that my wife was the person who helped save his company.”

I said nothing.

Robert swallowed.

“And then he asked me what you do for a living.”

I almost laughed.

Robert looked down.

“I told him you were a waitress.”
