My husband, Daniel, and I had been married for 19 years. Our daughter, Emily, was just 16 years old and had always been especially close to her father.
That summer, Daniel proposed taking Emily on vacation for two weeks to a beautiful seaside resort.
I couldn’t accompany them because my mother was recovering from an operation.
“Don’t worry, honey,” Daniel told me. I’ll take good care of our little one.
I kissed them to say goodbye, without imagining that those would be the last moments of tranquility of my life.
When they came back, Emily was a completely different person.
He barely spoke, avoided family dinners and locked himself in his room every time Daniel was home.
At first, I assumed I was simply going through a difficult stage of adolescence.
