Laura tried repeatedly to reason with him.
She explained that the timing of the pregnancy didn’t automatically prove infidelity.
She reminded him that medical follow-up mattered.
She asked him to speak with his doctor.
But Diego had stopped thinking rationally.
In his mind, the pregnancy could only have one explanation.
Someone else.
The argument became louder.
Then Diego said something that Laura would never forget.
“I don’t know you anymore.”
That night, he packed a suitcase.
Laura watched from the bedroom doorway as he folded shirts into a bag.
“Where are you going?”
He didn’t look at her.
“I’m moving in with Paula.”
Laura felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.
Paula was Diego’s coworker.
A woman Laura had met before.
A woman who had once complimented their marriage.
Now Diego was leaving his wife while she was pregnant and going directly to another woman.
The Woman Who Already Knew
The following morning, Laura’s mother-in-law arrived.
She wasn’t there to comfort her.
She had come to collect some of Diego’s belongings.
She carried two large black bags.
When Laura tried to explain what had happened, her mother-in-law interrupted.
“Diego doesn’t deserve this.”
“I didn’t betray him.”
The older woman looked at her coldly.
“That’s what everyone says.”
Within days, the story had spread.
Neighbors whispered.
People chose sides.
Some believed Diego.
Others refused to get involved.
Laura suddenly found herself carrying not only a pregnancy but also the weight of accusations from people who knew almost nothing about what had happened inside her marriage.
Then Diego made matters worse.
He posted a photograph online with Paula.
They were sitting at an expensive restaurant.
Paula was holding onto his arm.

Laura read it alone.
She sat on the bathroom floor and cried.
The pregnancy she’d initially celebrated now felt surrounded by fear.
She worried about raising the child alone.
She worried about money.
She worried about her home.
Most of all, she worried that her baby would grow up hearing that their existence had destroyed a marriage.
The Divorce Papers
Two weeks later, Diego asked Laura to meet him at a coffee shop.
Paula was there.
Laura immediately understood that this wasn’t going to be a conversation between husband and wife.
Diego placed a folder on the table.
“I want a quick divorce.”
Laura opened it.
The document contained conditions involving the house, financial support, custody, and the future child.
One clause was particularly disturbing.
If the baby wasn’t Diego’s, the document attempted to make Laura responsible for certain expenses associated with their marriage.
Laura stared at the page.
Then she laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the kind of laugh that comes when someone has been pushed beyond exhaustion.
“You want me to sign this?”
“Yes.”
“After accusing me of cheating?”
“You know what you did.”
“No,” Laura replied quietly. “I know what I didn’t do.”
Paula shifted uncomfortably.
Laura looked at her.
“For everyone?”
“What?”
“You said this divorce was healthiest for everyone. Is that what you really believe?”
Paula didn’t answer.
