The room fell completely silent.
«Two months ago, our son was born. Andrew promised he would leave his marriage soon. Today, I discovered that his wife knows absolutely nothing about it.»
My mother-in-law slowly placed her glass on the table.
«Andrew, is this true?»
My husband looked at his mother, then at me.
«I was going to explain everything.»
«When?» I asked. «At your next birthday party?»
He tried to approach me, but I stepped backward.
The most terrible part wasn’t even the existence of another woman and a child.
It was the realization that, for months, my husband had deliberately made me doubt myself.
Whenever I noticed his emotional distance, he called me oversensitive. Whenever I questioned his late-night phone calls, he accused me of being suspicious.
And when I once burst into tears and asked whether he had stopped loving me, he hugged me and assured me that I was imagining problems that didn’t exist.
