My husband refused to walk my 17-year-old daughter, his stepdaughter for nine years, at her high school senior night. “That’s something a real father should do,” he told her. But when her name was announced Thursday evening, her 79-year-old grandfather appeared with his walking cane and proudly accompanied her onto the court.

“Kaylee has been on the honor roll all four years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and has shown dairy heifers in 4-H for eight years…”

Then somebody in the top row stood up.

I don’t know who. I’ve asked around since. Nobody will claim it.

It might have been Mrs. Bauer. But I doubt she can stand up that fast.

Then the row under that one stood up.

Then the whole top section.

It went down the bleachers like water running down a hill. Row after row after row. Until the entire

home side of that gym was on its feet.

Old men who’d hauled milk with my father stood up. Women from his church circle stood up. Little kids who had no idea who he was stood up because everybody else was standing.
