My Husband’s Best Friend Offered to Drive My 16-Year-Old Daughter to Ballet — Weeks Later, Her Teacher Asked, “She Hasn’t Told You?”

I showed her the tuition receipts.

The recital email.

The new shoes I had bookmarked for her after she complained the soles of hers were wearing thin.

“Why would I do all of this if I wanted you to stop?”

She stared at the screen.

Her confidence disappeared little by little.

“He said you felt guilty.”

“For what?”

“For letting me believe I was better than I really am.”

I could barely speak.

Tessa continued, her voice trembling.

“He said Ms. Hart thought I was behind everyone else. He said you asked him to keep bringing me here because you didn’t want me to know right away.”

My chest hurt.

“And you believed him?”

“He said Dad agreed too.”

I closed my eyes.

That explained why she had stopped talking to both of us.
