My Husband’s Best Friend Offered to Drive My 16-Year-Old Daughter to Ballet — Weeks Later, Her Teacher Asked, “She Hasn’t Told You?”

Then he called Colin.

Colin arrived twenty minutes later with his wife, Rebecca.

He looked irritated.

“What is so urgent?”

I placed Tessa’s phone on the table.

“This.”

Rebecca read the messages first.

Her face slowly changed.

“What did you do?”

Colin leaned back.

“You’re making this sound worse than it was.”

“You told my daughter I was ashamed of her,” I said.

“I was trying to manage her expectations.”

“You lied to her.”

“She was getting obsessed with ballet.”

Tessa was sitting beside Graham.

“You told me my mom thought I embarrassed myself.”

Colin looked toward her.

“Tessa, sweetheart—”

“Don’t,” I said. “Do not call her that.”

Rebecca stared at her husband.

Then she asked one question.

“Is this about Sadie?”

Sadie was their daughter.

She and Tessa had taken beginner ballet together when they were younger.
