“She Deserves Every Opportunity to Succeed”
My dad eventually sat me down and explained that he had “borrowed” from my college fund to help pay for my stepsister’s private school tuition and her academic programs. According to him, it was a necessary decision, because she “shows more potential” and is “a brighter student” who “deserves every opportunity to succeed” — so the money, in his words, was simply “better spent” on her future instead of mine. He even said it would be a “waste” not to invest in her, which meant, whether he said it outright or not, that he’d already decided my own future wasn’t worth the same investment.
I was livid. And underneath the anger, genuinely heartbroken in a way that took me by surprise — my mother’s last real gift to me, quietly handed over to someone else’s daughter, by the one person who was supposed to protect it. But instead of falling apart in front of him, I decided to flip the entire script and make absolutely sure my dad understood, clearly and completely, exactly what he’d just done.
I deferred my admission for a year. I took a deep breath. And I got to work on a plan of my own.
