My Son Flew His Family To Hawaii For Thanksgiving And Left Me Behind With A Note On The Refrigerator

Standing in that kitchen on Thanksgiving morning with that note in my hand, the thing that arrived wasn’t shock.

It was clarity. Horrible, complete, four-years-late clarity.

They hadn’t asked me to come live with them in 2022 because they loved me and didn’t want me alone.

They’d asked me because a house they couldn’t afford became affordable if a widow with ninety-six thousand dollars and a free afternoon lived in the back bedroom.

And the proof was in my hand, because people who love you tell you about Hawaii.
I Poured Myself a Cup of Coffee and Sat Down at a Table I Had Paid For

Out of the eleven-hundred-dollar Italian machine with the brass handle.

And I sat at the table I bought, in the chairs I bought, looking at the curtains I had measured the windows for myself, and the blender on the counter that I bought because a beautiful house can’t have old appliances.
