Across the room, Elena laughed like she was winning.

“If I may,” she said, smiling at Julian. “A mother should say a few words on her daughter’s wedding day.”
My chair scraped back.
Chloe stood first.
Elena lifted the microphone. “Chloe, my beautiful girl, from the day you were born, I dreamed of seeing you in white.”
Chloe’s face stayed calm.
“A mother’s love never leaves,” Elena continued. “Even when life, pain, and other people pull her away from her children.”
