On Father’s Day my millionaire son walked into my freezing apartment, saw the tinned soup on the table, and asked how I was managing on the eight thousand a month his wife sends me. I told him nobody sends me anything.

Six words. I did not even think about it. That is the honest account of the single most expensive thing I have done in my life.

There is two hundred and eighty-eight thousand dollars in that account.

It has been sitting there for three years while I walked six blocks for powdered milk.

And here is why I never saw a statement.

I did see them.

They have come every single month. To that apartment, and to the one before it, and to the house before that.

A white window envelope, about the fourth of the month, for ten years. Nobody has ever failed to deliver one.

I stopped opening post from that bank in the May of 2015.

Four weeks after the funeral. There was no decision about it; there was one envelope on a mat on a Tuesday and I put it in a drawer and then it was simply what I did.
