I was about to relax when Robert grabbed my hand.
Hard.
“What is it?”
He wasn’t looking at me.
He was staring straight ahead.
“This isn’t a detour.”
I tried to laugh.
“How do you know?”
He answered very quietly.
“Because I’ve been here before.”
I looked at him.
“When?”
He stayed silent for a few seconds.
Then he whispered,
“A long time ago. And this road doesn’t lead to any resort.”
A feeling of unease rose inside me.
“Then where does it lead?”
Robert looked at the driver’s rearview mirror.
At that exact moment, the driver looked at him through the mirror.
Their eyes met.
And I saw something I still haven’t forgotten.
The driver smiled.
Not a normal smile.
The kind of smile that made it seem as if he had just confirmed that Robert understood what was happening.
