THE SECRET HIDDEN UNDER THE BLANKET

“Do you understand why I’m hurt?” I asked.

He nodded.

“I do.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

I pointed toward the door.

“Tonight, I needed you to protect our marriage. Instead, you protected a tradition.”

He swallowed hard.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Then something unexpected happened.

My father-in-law picked up the kitten and walked toward the door.

“I’ll leave.”

My husband immediately looked at him.

“Dad…”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I made a mistake.”

He stopped beside the doorway.

“Your wife is not someone who has to prove she belongs in this family. She became part of it the moment you chose her.”

I watched him leave.

The door closed softly behind him.

And for the first time that night, my husband and I were alone.

But the silence between us felt heavier than any argument.

Because I realized something.

The kitten was never the real problem.

The strange tradition was never the real problem.

The real problem was that my husband had spent years learning to obey his family…

and only one night learning how to choose me.

I thought that was the end of the secret.

I thought my father-in-law had only wanted to bring his late wife’s memory into our marriage.

But the next morning, when I walked into the kitchen and saw what was waiting on the table beside Lily’s old photo…

I realized there was another reason he had come into our room that night.

A reason nobody had told me.

And it had nothing to do with tradition.
