The soldier returned home ahead of schedule to surprise his family, but the daughter whispered, “Mom said you could never come back.”

A few weeks later, we were brought before a family judge. After reviewing the circumstances, the judge provided me with basic physical custody of my daughter. Ellie was supposed to stay at her school, and Megan was given the right to meet her on schedule.

I didn’t feel like a winner. Megan was still Ellie’s mother, and Ellie still loved her.

But now our daughter could no longer be taken to another place without proper consideration of all the circumstances.

That evening, Ellie celebrated days on her purple calendar, including the ones she was supposed to spend with her mom.

  • Mom said I could still see her.

  • Of course you can.

  • And I’ll stay in my school?

  • Yeah.

She looked up at me.

Are you allowed to live here?

I put the kitchen towel on.
