My tears fell on paper.
My father sat quietly.
I walked up and hugged him with all my might.
“Dad, why did you never tell anyone?
He gently stroked my hair.
“Because, honey, when you help someone, you don’t have to know the whole world.
The next day, three women arrived at our home.
The youngest, Jessica, hugged my father as soon as he opened the door.
He kept him hugged for a long time.
My mother was standing next to me, wiping out tears.
We all sat together around that same old kitchen table.
The same table where, just a day earlier, I had believed my father was a terrible man.
And right there, Jessica said something I’ll never forget.
Our father saved a man’s life. But that man saved the future of a whole family.
