The most beautiful girl at school suddenly asked my lonely son to prom — I feared it was a cruel joke until she told me the real reason

“No.”

I pulled back and looked at him.

“For being the kind of person who sat beside somebody when everyone else walked past.”

His expression changed.

“You talked to Celeste.”

“She called.”

Tobin groaned and covered his face.

“Mom.”

I laughed.

Then he grew quiet.

“Milo was having a hard time. It wasn’t a big deal.”

To Tobin, maybe it hadn’t been.

That was exactly what made it matter.

He hadn’t helped Milo because there was an audience.

He hadn’t told teachers.

He hadn’t told me.

He had seen someone sitting alone and decided that person shouldn’t have to sit alone anymore.

Two years later, someone finally did the same for him.

Tobin graduated a month later.

In almost every photo from that day, he was surrounded by classmates.
