Nia asked whether something was wrong with the baby.
The technician didn’t answer directly.
She simply said she wanted Dr. Harris to look at something.
Ten minutes later, the doctor entered.
He examined the ultrasound, asked how long the unusual hair growth had been happening, and wanted to know whether Nia had noticed any other changes to her body.
Then he moved the probe away from the baby and pointed toward a dark, rounded shape on the screen.
It was attached near one of her ovaries.
Nia stared at it.
“What is that?”
Dr. Harris asked the technician to measure it before answering.
When the numbers appeared, his expression became more serious.
“Has anyone ever told you that you had a growth on your ovary?”
Nia shook her head.
