The word growth immediately frightened her.

Dr. Harris told her they could not determine that from the ultrasound alone. He ordered blood tests and asked another specialist to examine her before she went home.
Less than an hour later, the doctor returned carrying the first results.
This time, he closed the door before speaking.
Nia’s hormone levels were far higher than expected during an ordinary pregnancy. Dr. Harris explained that the mass they had discovered might be producing those hormones, which could also explain the dramatic hair growth.
Nia immediately asked about the baby.
“The heartbeat is strong, and the baby is stable right now,” he said. “But until we know exactly what this mass is doing, I don’t want you leaving the hospital.”
